Why do you think the Department of Transportation will not support a train stop in Oconomowoc? Is there more to the story than the new Mayor raising questions? How did city officials arrive at a $30 million figure to build a rail station? The state was willing to pay $5 million. Why would a building to hold waiting passangers in a small town cost $30 million? Why does every discussion about downtown development in Oconomowoc concern parking? Do you have trouble finding parking?

A boat burned Sunday at the dock at City Beach Sunday on Lac La belle, according to a lifeguard. A pier burned and police tape encircled the area. Lukily no one was seriously hurt. Black smoke billowed during the blaze. Search Channel 12 slideshow for photos.

We rented a tandem kayak at City Beach on Labor Day and toured Lac La Belle. This is a great bargain for area residents. For just $5 an hour you can rent a single or double kayak or a canoe. It costs just a bit more for non-Oconomowoc City residents. Unfortunately the rental program ended on Labor Day but remember this opportunity for next year. Brennan's Market opens today in Oconomowoc at the corner of Hwy B and 67. Brennan's is known for their quality produce, cheese, wine and other speciality items. Construction makes it a liitle tricky to navigate however if you turn east from Hwy 67 into the Pabst Farms Shopping area you can then make a left turn and cross Hwy B.

It will be interesting to see how Pick N Save, Brennan's and Aldi's compete with each other and offer locals a wide variety of items to choose from.

Snow fell in Oconomowoc today. Saturday we yanked weeds out of the garden and saw boats and boats and trailers skittering about as we did errands. Temps were at or above 70 degrees. April is a transitional month. The field fires and winds of just a few days ago are almost a forgotten memory as area residents bundle up AGAIN now and slop through puddle-filled craters and wet, grey snowy rain like weather. Driving through Mount Horeb recently we noticed there are a lot of Round Abouts. Have you seen those? Maybe you don't get to Mount Horeb. But if you do buy some mustard. That's where the museum is-the mustard museum. Barry is the Dean there...at Poupon University. I'm not making this up. He gave me the tour. We have a lot of mustard now.

Where do you go for car repair? Everyone wants an honest mechanic. Do you know a good place? We've discovered Gary Naylor, from Naylor's Auto, on Lapham Street, next to Retzlaff Marine, where the street used to go through before the bypass was built. Remember the wooden railroad bridge...I digress. Anyway, where do you go? Who do you like? We've heard Ralph's is good on the west side of town but we've heard you need patience to get in there. He does such a good job, he can't see you this week...or next. We've tried a lot of spots. Of course we drive a lot. Three cars we own have more than 550,000 miles. We don't like to spend money on car repairs or even new cars. Finding an honest car repair person is like finding an honest mortgage broker...you know what I mean? Let's say your part costs $100, they sell it to you for $200. It takes 2 hours for the job, they charge three. Sound familiar? Let us know where you go. We all like to save money, don't we? Two sure signs that Spring has sprung in Oconomowoc are the Muskies running up the Oconomowoc River toward the dam at Hwy. 16 and the opening of the Kiltie Drive In.
You can tell when the muskies are running when you drive by and at first you wonder why people are bent over the bridge and then you see lots of parked cars nearby.

Lake News You Can Use

We stopped at Porticello last night and watched the Silver Lake waves lap against the shore with a south wind screaming and rain clouds looming. You can't get much closer to a lake and be inside a building, 17 feet I think. A few days ago there was ice not waves. The DNR made two fish cribs which, according to the bartender, recently dropped through the ice in 30 feet of water which should make for some good fishing at that spot.

Speaking of lakes there is talk of demolishing the old Boelter shoe building which would open the main downtown corner to a Fowler Lake view. Additional plans are to have a larger boat dock, more parking and more green space and outdoor seating areas. There is also a plan to move the boat launch to a different location. What do you think?

The rains came, not on little cat's feet, but more like a hose you could not turn off. Standing water was visible all over Oconomowoc. Calm winds accompanied the rains as did fog. Most of the snow was gone Sunday morning but that may change quickly as the mercury drops. Central and North Eastern Wisconsin should be shoveling soon according to the forecast. A Robin searched for worms yesterday in our yard, a sure sign of Spring.

A 10-year old snowboarder fell off a chairlift and was injured at the Highlands of Olympia yesterday according to published reports. Flight for Life responded and transported the injured boy. This was the most serious accident in recent memory at Olympia. I was a ski instructor there for many years.

It seems as if another town developed on the frozen surface of Fowler Lake Sunday. Wingers Tap sponsored an ice fishing tournament on a beautiful sunny windless Sunday. The lake looked like a combination used car lot and fish festival simultaneously happening. Even a bicyclist braved the wintry day as he pedaled on hardened truck tracks meandering out to various hot spots. Although it was cold, for some reason after hiking on the lake we decided gelato was in order and my wife and I made our first visit to the fine Italian eatery on Wisconsin Avenue. It was delicious.

What retailers would you like to see at Pabst Farms? A Cousins sub shop is coming. Is this good news? Some residents hoped unique stores could come to the mall. Stores not available in Milwaukee or Madison. As the credit crisis continues it will be an increasingly tough sell to convince high end national retailers to build here. Big box stores are not always welcome unless they are in some else's back yard. The mayor floated a suggestion recently about some of the potential players that may be coming and the suggestion went over like a lead balloon.

The Summit school was razed and now the northeast corner of HWYS 67 and B is ready for redevelopment. The YMCA is state of the art although it is already too small. The Pick N save store is nice but won't be the newest in town as the East Side Pick N Save opens soon. Chili's restaurant looks popular if you count the cars in the parking lot.

Whitecaps rolled on Lac Labelle Sunday as strong west winds gusting over 35 knots pounded the shoreline off North Lake Road. A few brave souls fought the stormy seas windsurfing and pleasure boating but it was a bumpy ride. The Beach by the Band shell and Bender Beach and the South Side Beaches were oddly empty as high water and construction curtailed some swimming for area residents. It has been a strange summer so far.

The Farmers market at Shorehaven is starting to have more items like beets, carrots, lettuce, potatoes, broccoli and other vegetables and flowers. Stop by Saturday morning, support the local farmers and eat healthy.

No Wake On Lac LaBelle Lifted

The no wake has been lifted on Lac LaBelle. On a windless morning July 5th we saw a water skier and some wave runners enjoying the long Holiday weekend. The water level is still over the piers at the boat launch at City Beach but a skilled driver can launch a boat carefully at the ramp without submerging your car. The lake and beach are quieter than anyone can remember on a Holiday weekend due to downtown construction, flooding and the church explosion.
